An intresting & somewhat unexplored route out in southeast Dublin is the No.59, which runs from Dun Laoighre to Machintosh Park via Killiney & Dalkey. The Route leads a somewhat quite life, run from Donnybrook Garage with a normal requirement of 2 buses.

Dun Laoighre is the main starting point for the Route, and the 59 shares it's terminus here with the 111. WV21 is seen here with VL3 at Dun Laoighre on August 18th 2008.

The Route also collects at Dun Laoighre shopping centre & sets down there. WV11 approaches the stop on January 2nd 2004.

The route between Dalkey & Killiney, as per seen above, is where it really gets intresting. The route has to navigate a series of narrow roads in local housing areas.

The route also has to navigate the turning circle area in Killiney, which , as can be seen ,is somewhat "narrow"!

The other end terminus for the route is Machintosh Park, which had been terminus to the 7A for many years before the 59 was extended from Killiney. AV73 is seen here at the "bus only layby" terminus on August 18th 2008. Although the 59's main staple diet is WV's, the route has seen double deckers crop up frequently, with a pair of EV's doing so at the start of August. Withdrawl of RV's has however seen a shift of AV's as backup deckers for the route.

The 2 pictures shown above show the 59 as it used to be in the early 2000's.

MV80 Is seen here at Dun Laoighre in the summer of 2003. Donnybrook had recieved MV79-82/84 a year beforehand, with one typically allocated to the 59. VL3 is the other oddity, shortly after the 8 was cancelled in 2002 the 59 was divided into 2 routes, the 59 to serve Dalkey & Killiney with MV's and the 59A to serve Machintosh Park with VL's. Reliability problems with the VL's as well as capacity issues saw the 2 routes amalgated in 2004, with WV class operation.

Our last look at the 59 shows a somewhat unusual devolpment for the route in recent times.

WV10 in March/April 2005 gained an all over advertisement for Today FM's "Pimp my Radio" campain. Although she wandered her main staple ground was the 59 where she is seen at Machintosh Park in June 2005.

The route is worth a trip on but because of tight turnarounds on some departures checking the timetable in advance is recommended.
